Book cover for Florida Lighthouses 30 Beacons and the Keepers Who Tended Them

Florida Lighthouses

$40.00

Autographed copies available for a limited time only. This new book by Rick and Terri Tuers, with Foreword by Lighthouse Preservation Society president, James Hyland, is a thorough, colorful history of Florida’s lighthouses and the keepers who faithfully tended them. It includes engineering details, military histories, and stories of personal bravery and commitment. It also explores the “lost beacons” of Florida, fleshing out the skeletal remains of destroyed and demolished beacons. In short, it’s the best book on Florida lighthouses we’ve seen, yet. As a special fundraiser, it can be yours, with signed keepsake autographs, for $40, which includes shipping and handling.

Description

Discover the maritime and human history of Florida’s 30 awe-inspiring lighthouses. This soft cover book contains 192 pages of modern color and historical black-and-white photographs, as well as postcards and diagrams. Florida’s shores have been witness to over 5 centuries of maritime history, including battles in the Revolutionary War, the Seminole Wars, the Civil War, and World War II.

Diving into the lives of the keepers of these beacons, the Tuerses describe how the lighthouse keepers navigated not only these political conflicts, but nature’s wrath, braving hurricanes and wild storms to keep the lights burning. This meticulously researched book covers the technical – such as the engineering behind the design of the towers and lenses – as well as the personal. It’s a great read, and the best book we’ve seen on the subject.
