Since 1797 it has moved countless people.
After 200 years, we finally returned the favor.
When erosion threatened to take Cape Cod’s oldest lighthouse forever, local citizens met with federal and state officials to try to find the large sum of money that would be needed to move this historic Highland Light to safety. Eventually the funds were raised, and, in a spectacular engineering feat, the endangered lighthouse was lifted and moved back out of harm’s way.
This rewarding rescue was accomplished, in part, thanks to people like you, who have helped The Lighthouse Preservation Society establish both federal and state lighthouse grants programs that have rescued over 160 lighthouses around the country. In the case of Cape Cod’s Highland Light, the society was responsible for establishing the funds from which the projects largest single contribution was procured – a state lighthouse grants fund that gave $500,000 to saving the historic lighthouse from destruction.
